How It Works

While Craps – with its myriad wager options and complicated table layout – may seem a bit intimidating at first, it is actually quite easy to get started. Just stick to the basics while you get the hang of it. The player (or shooter) starts the game by placing a bet. The simplest wager is called a pass line bet and is made by placing one’s chips on the section of the table layout that is labelled “pass line”. (We will cover the other types of Craps wager in a moment.) This is followed by the come-out roll, in which the shooter rolls a pair of dice with the objective of landing either a 7 or an 11. If the shooter rolls either of these numbers, he or she wins the game and receives a 1:1 payout. However, the shooter loses the game (Craps out) if he or she rolls a 2, 3 or 12.

In the event that the player rolls neither a winning nor a losing number, the Craps game enters a second round. The number rolled in the come out then becomes “the point” and the objective is now to land that number. The game will continue in this vein until the player either wins or Craps out.

Each of these, in turn, has a number of variations, as follows:

How Craps Came to Be

According to the majority of historians, the earliest incarnation of Craps on record was a complex 14th Century English game called Hazard. Craps as we know it today dates back to the early 1800s, when a New Orleans man named Bernard de Mandeville simplified the game and gave it its modern title. Another, less likely theory is that Craps is even older than that and was first played by Roman soldiers in 100AD. Legend has it that the soldiers used pig knuckles as die and played on their shields.
